A six star experience at the Chicago Marathon!

We’ve followed Helen Carroll’s incredible running journey across the majors, culminating in her sixth and final star in Chicago! Despite a permanent hip injury, Helen defied doctors’ predictions to complete the original six Abbott World Marathon Majors. So, how did race day in Chicago unfold? We caught up with Helen to hear all about her experience.

How did race day go at the Chicago Marathon?

It was nothing short of incredible. Like all the Abbott World Marathon Majors, it had that extra-special atmosphere.

The start line was buzzing with energy, and before I knew it, we were off. The course winds through the streets of Chicago, and while the urban setting dominates, the supporters truly make it a unique experience. My favourite part was reaching the Sports Tours cheer zone around halfway. I had missed it in New York due to the crowds, so this time, I was determined not to.

About a mile out, I caught sight of Grant Park and realised the end was near. That’s when the emotions hit. Tears welled up as I reflected on a challenge that I wasn’t sure I’d ever complete. Thankfully, I got the tears out of the way before crossing the finish line—no one wants teary finisher photos!

Were there any difficulties on the Chicago Marathon course?

The race day weather was warmer than expected, so I walked away with a bit of a suntan in November, which I found amusing. Other than that, the day went smoothly. All the Majors are so well-organised that it’s almost impossible not to enjoy yourself.

What moments do you remember the most?

Two moments stand out for me. First, crossing the Chicago Marathon finish line and officially completing the race. Second, walking to the Six Star medal collection point, where the team erupted in cheers as they spotted my Six Star bib. Having that medal placed around my neck and posing for the official photo is a memory I will cherish forever.

How did it feel knowing you were about to complete your six-star journey?

Standing on the start line of the Chicago Marathon, knowing I was about to complete my Six Star journey, was an unforgettable feeling. Goosebumps of excitement ran through me as I reflected on the eight years it had taken to reach this point. This journey not only kept me fit but also allowed me to see the world and meet incredible people who have become lifelong friends.

I want to say a massive thank you to Sports Tours International. This dream wouldn’t have been possible without their support—not just with logistics but also with the motivation to keep going. From Julie Bake screaming my name in Central Park at the 2022 NYC Marathon to the cheer zones and post-race celebrations.

What’s next now that you’ve completed the Abbott World Marathon Majors?

People keep asking me what’s next, and they usually laugh when I tell them my next goal is to complete the SuperHalfs. In 2025, I plan to run the Prague Half Marathon, finishing a journey I began pre-COVID with races in Cardiff, Valencia, Lisbon, and Copenhagen. Beyond that, I have a few ideas brewing, so stay tuned!

I’m also thrilled to be joining Sports Tours International as a rep-in-training next year. I can’t wait to help others achieve their running dreams. Look out for me at races—I’ll be there, cheering you on and celebrating your successes!
