Meet the Team – Introducing Vicki

Ok, so the chances are, if you’ve taken part on a Sports Travel International running trip at any point in the last few years, you’ll already have met Vicki. But, now, as part of out ‘Meet the Team’ series, we thought it was about time you got an official introduction. Vicki is the Product Manager for flights and Running for the Sports Tours International Group. She spoke to us about her love of travel and her plans for a big get away and special celebration, once the pandemic is over.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Vicki

Q: So, tell us a bit about yourself?

I have worked in the travel industry for 26 years, with a brief career change when I decided I wanted to be a teacher of Travel and Tourism.  This was temporary. I soon decided I missed the buzz of the travel industry and returned 4 years later. Throughout my time working in travel, I have been fortunate enough to have travelled extensively over the world. I have been to events and built relationships with suppliers that we still use to this day.

Q: How did you come to be involved with Sports Travel International and what do you do there?

I am the product manager at Sports Travel International. This was a natural transition for me, as I had held the same role at our sister company, Sports Tours International, for several years.

Q: How has your job role changed during the pandemic and lock-down and how have you adapted to these changes (particularly while remote working)?

My role has changed a little during the pandemic. I have become a source of information, offering help and advice to our fantastic clients, who have been understanding and exceptional during what has been a very challenging time. I have tried to offer help and support wherever I can. After all, we are all in this together. I have spent more time in meetings, often via Zoom or Teams, to try to stay connected with all the team. It was important to keep us working together effectively, and so that we were not isolated. Its often better to have a quick chat than send an email and wait on a reply, so in many ways, I think things have become more efficient.

Q: What have you done during lock-down to ‘get away from it all’?

Its been hard at times to ‘switch off’, especially while working from home. I eventually made myself a home office, rather than working from the dining room table, which meant at the end of each day I could close the door and walk away.

Away from work, I have spent many an evening outdoors (weather permitting), walking locally, and discovering nearby beauty spots.

Q: What is your favourite destination and why?

My favourite destination has to be New York.  I’ve been lucky enough to have travelled there may times, both for work and pleasure.  I love the hustle and bustle of the city, the food, the different cultures, and to top it all off the locals are very friendly and helpful.  I like that there are so many different sightseeing option. You can go on the water, in the parks, in museums, even on the open top buses.  When you are sat in Central Park, taking a minute, it seems very quiet compared to the city around. Well, unless you’re in the park on marathon day! I also love the New York accent. I could listen to a local talk for hours.

A close second, in terms of destination, would be Berlin. A city steeped in history with warm and welcoming locals, and also home to one of the world’s greatest city marathons!

Q: What are your plans for 2021/ into 2022?

I think my 2021 will stay fairly quiet, with a number of family occasions (special birthdays/weddings) coming up later in the year. I am however really looking forward to 2022. Hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy a special family holiday to coincide with my daughter’s 18th birthday. We might even go back to New York!

Q: Any final words of wisdom?

Although the last 12 months (and probably a few more to come) have been difficult for everybody, I can see light at the end of the tunnel, and we have many great events to look forward too.
