Ireland More Active than Ever as we move into 2021

A 3 part study, carried out between March and September 2020 by Sport Ireland, has shown that, despite the tough lock-down restrictions, people have become more active than ever before. During the months reviewed, there were higher numbers engaging with cycling, running, hill walking, and weight training than in previous years.

Almost 80% of people surveyed stated that keeping active was now part of their weekly routine. Although activity levels dropped when lock-down restrictions were eased slightly towards the end of summer, both the levels of inactivity among Ireland’s adult population, and the gender gap in physical activity remain lower than they were in 2019.

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD said,

“Despite all of the challenges, it is great that so many people have decided to be active… It is particularly encouraging to see that  90% of people intend to continue being active regularly into the future.”

These increased levels of activity are a really positive sign, especially as getting out and keeping moving can be so beneficial for more than just our physical health.

According to a survey by mental health charity Mind, 94% of those asked reported that spending time out in nature, either for exercise or relaxation had a positive impact on their mental health.

Research has also suggested that even a single, short walk in the countryside can have significant positive effects. 90 per cent of participants showed increased levels of self-esteem, while almost three quarters reported decreased levels of depression. These well- being benefits of getting out doors are considered by many as more vital than ever before. Sport Ireland research showed that 77% of people thought that remaining active during this COVID – 19 pandemic was more important compared to at other times

“As we have all spent more time at home in recent months, many of us have rediscovered the importance of regular physical activity and the benefits of being outdoors.” stated Director of Ethics and Participation in Sport Ireland, Dr. Una May.
