Holiday’s Fit For Heroes – The Winner Revealed

The search is finally at an end! Today we will announce the winner of the Sports Travel International, Holidays Fit for Heroes 2020 Christmas campaign!

Before we do, however, we want to thank each and every one of you. Anyone who nominated either themselves, or their loved ones into the competition. We have been absolutely blown away by the responses, and humbled when reading your stories. Our  judge, host of Tri Talking Sport Joanne Murphy, loved reading all of the entries, and it was no mean feat to select just done winner!

We know that, across the country, there are thousands of people who have worked extremely hard this year to help those most in need. In doing so, they have put the needs of others well above their own. There may still be a lot of unsung heroes out there, but we hope that, with this competition, we can show our gratitude.

To all the Front Line Workers, Volunteers, Health Care and Medical staff; you are amazing. Thank you so much for all you have done throughout 2020

Cathal Oakes

Here’s what Cathal’s sister had to say…

My brother Cathal flies the search & rescue helicopter R115, but his real heroism happens after his shift. He volunteers with St Vincent de Paul. During the COVID-19 lock-down he managed the ‘Vinnie in the Van’ initiative; delivering to those in need, when they couldn’t get out to access services. In any other spare time he was shopping for and ‘window visiting’ our parents, and elderly aunt and brother who has additional needs, with whom he also did a virtual meetup with through facetime every other day, to keep him active with an exercise bike session.

He was a life line to so many people during the pandemic, just as he always is. Then, every day, he heads back into work, ready to rescue those in difficulty. In any spare time he had, he ‘checked in’ on his elderly neighbours, aunts, uncles and anyone that he thought might be struggling, or would benefit from a chat and an assurance that they are not alone.

Before the pandemic, and I am sure he will continue afterwards, he does weekly visits to the local nursing homes. There’s so much more to add besides. He is the most compassionate, giving and considerate person ever, with endless capacity for those in need. Amazingly, while many know some of his kind deeds, only those of us closest to him are aware of the full spectrum of what he does for others. If that wasn’t enough, in October he realised a goal, and ran a sub 3 marathon, solo.

He has to be the ultimate unsung hero.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Cathal for his amazing efforts this, and every, year. We look forward to catching up with him, when he returns from his trip!
