The Wine Marathon France: Fitness, Wine & Fancy Dress

Every Marathon has its own personality, but none quite compare to the infamous wine marathon France hosts annually. Imagine running 26.2 miles through Bordeaux’s most celebrated vineyard, stopping along the way to sample award-winning wines, mouth-watering delicacies and admire the runners as their crazy fancy-dress costumes line the rural paths.

The Médoc Marathon, often described as the booziest marathon in the world, is held in the heart of Bordeaux’s legendary wine country. This unforgettable event proves that marathons don’t always have to be about chasing personal bests. Sometimes, they’re about celebrating life, laughter, and exceptional wine.

What is the Wine Marathon?

Officially known as the Marathon du Médoc, this unique wine marathon France hosts every September attracts thousands of runners from across the globe. The route winds through the picturesque vineyards of the Médoc region, north of Bordeaux, passing some of the area’s most prestigious wine estates.

Why It’s Known as the Bordeaux Wine Marathon

The Médoc Marathon is often referred to as the Bordeaux wine marathon because it takes place in one of France’s most famous wine-producing regions. Bordeaux has earned a global reputation for producing exceptional red wines, and the marathon offers runners a rare opportunity to experience this world-renowned landscape from a completely different perspective.

The course features 23 wine-tasting stops alongside gourmet food stations serving everything from ham, cheese, and oysters to steak and even ice cream. As runners make their way through the Médoc vineyards, they’ll also enjoy exclusive access to many of the region’s renowned wine estates—places that wine enthusiasts often dream of visiting.

While the wine marathon is centred around drinking wine during the race, runners aren’t obliged to indulge. Every wine station is optional, meaning serious runners can skip the tastings if they’re aiming for a faster finish. Those embracing the full experience, however, will find themselves sampling a variety of Bordeaux wines throughout the course. Local wineries proudly showcase their vintages, turning the race into a moving wine festival. Combined with live music, delicious food and enthusiastic spectators, every few kilometres feels like a village celebration rather than a traditional aid station.

For anyone who loves running and wine, France’s wine marathon is a must!

Fancy Dress is Part of the Tradition

One of the most entertaining aspects of this French marathon with wine is the costumes. With fancy -dress listed as mandatory in the official race rules, you certainly won’t feel out of place.

Each year, AMCM, the organisers of the wine marathon choose a new theme, encouraging runners to get creative and base their fancy dress costumes around it. For 2026, the theme is ‘The ’80s’, so expect a sea of fluorescent leotards, leg warmers, shell suits, and plenty of retro hairstyles. With more than 50 live bands and orchestras performing along the route, runners will be treated to a soundtrack of iconic ’80s hits, helping to carry them through all 42.2 kilometres of vineyards, wine tastings, and unforgettable marathon fun.

Is the Wine Marathon Difficult?

Physically, the course is considered achievable for most runners who have trained for a marathon. The wine marathon is one of France’s most rural courses. There is approximately 180m total elevation gain, gently rolling through the vineyards, but there are no big hills to worry about.

The real challenge isn’t the distance- it’s going against everything you have learned in previous races and allowing yourself to stop and enjoy everything along the way. With more than twenty wine-tasting stations, gourmet food, live entertainment, and breathtaking vineyard scenery, many participants happily trade a fast finish time for a truly memorable experience.

If your goal is setting a personal best, this probably isn’t the race for you. But if you’re looking for a marathon unlike any other, filled with laughter, great wine, and unforgettable moments, few events can compare. You might only run a marathon in France with wine once, so enjoy every moment!
