Autumn 2020 – What Can I Run?

It’s safe to say that the start of 2020 has not panned out the way we expected. There have been widespread changes and disruptions to our everyday lives, brought about by the the global COVID – 19 pandemic. Event postponements and cancellations have become an almost daily occurrence. Restrictions on movement and outdoor activity have also meant that, for many, outdoor endurance training is currently very limited. Finding the motivation to carry on might be feeling difficult right now.

But all these measures have been put in place for a very good reason. To help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Then, as a global active community, we will reach the end of this disaster sooner, and get back to what we love most. The Big Events.

The good news (especially for fans of a full race calendar) is that, with 4 World Marathon Majors, packed in around countless other high profile events; it looks like autumn/ winter 2020, is going to be one that runners everywhere will remember for a long time!

2020 is set to see some of our highest profile races reach some lofty milestones. This includes a landmark 40th birthday for the Virgin Money London Marathon and the iconic Great North Run, and the 50th edition of the TCS New York City Marathon!

First of all, don’t panic! Given that the majority of the 2020 marathon season won’t be kicking off until mid September, a standard 12 or 16 week marathon training plan would not need to start until June or July, so there’s no need to get too worried about your race preparation just yet. You can keep your pre marathon fitness levels high, with plenty of easy training (training at a high intensity can increase risk of injury and compromise the immune system), set a new goal, and then focus on your target ahead.

You could use the coming weeks as a great opportunity to catch up on often neglected strength training. Stair climbing and skipping are great ways to keep on top of your cardio, without needing tons of space or expensive gym equipment, while training platforms like Zwift and Strava can help us feel connected, even in these hard times of isolation.

Here’s all the dates you need to know, of the different events around the world!
